Criminal Justice (MS)

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice is a social science degree. As such, students are trained in the areas of criminological theory, criminal justice policy, law and social control, research methodology and data analysis. The goal of the program is to produce graduates who can think broadly and critically about issues related to crime and the criminal justice system, and to be informed consumers as well as producers of scientific research. These skills can serve students well in many areas of the criminal justice workforce, and/or in their future endeavors in Ph.D. programs.

Earth Sciences (MS)

The Master of Science in Earth Sciences gives students the opportunity for study and research in the areas of geology, hydrology, atmospheric science, remote sensing, spatial analysis and environmental science. The program offers graduate students personal guidance in field, laboratory, and computing facilities. The program offers a healthy combination of both field- and model-based Earth Science research as well as applied and academic research opportunities.

Emergency Management (CERT)

As part of the Master of Public Administration program, the graduate certificate in Emergency Management provides education and training for the public and nonprofit sectors to conduct scholarly and applied research to advance the field of public administration and serve the community. Specialized training can be obtained in this certificate without having to pursue the MPA master's degree.

English (MA)

The Master of Arts in English offers concentrations in literature, children's literature, linguistics, English for specific purposes, composition/rhetoric, English education, technical and professional writing and creative writing. We also have a new M.A./M.F.A. dual degree program with Kingston University London (accreditation pending). Our students graduate to pursue successful careers in commerce and education, or to move forward into the very best doctoral programs nationwide.

Ethics (applied) (CERT)

The graduate certificate in Applied Ethics is of interest to three groups of students: (1) professionals working in areas of applied ethics; (2) students who are beginning to explore graduate work in philosophy; and (3) students in other master’s and doctoral programs, such as biology, health administration, and public policy, who expect their careers to include work in applied ethics.

Ethics and Applied Philosophy (MA)

The graduate program in Ethics and Applied Philosophy aims to deepen students’ understanding and mastery of historical and contemporary philosophical traditions. The student is invited to engage their graduate philosophical training with diverse and pressing societal issues. Our faculty’s research areas, and our close relationship with the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, together provide unparalleled opportunity for our master’s and certificate students to augment their existing professional skills or train for further work in philosophy or other fields.

Geographic Information Science and Technology (CERT)

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, GRADUATE CERTIFICATE The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIS&T) program provides students in-depth training and education in GIS. Students with different backgrounds (e.g., biology/ecology, geography, earth sciences, meteorology, engineering, social science, public health and computer science) are exposed to knowledge in cutting-edge geospatial theory, methods, and technologies, including GIS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, cartography, and geovisualization. Students develop geospatial skills that are of great help in their domain-specific problem-solving using state-of-the-art GIS. The GIS training that students receive from the graduate certificate program makes them highly competitive in their future career in academic or industrial fields.

Geography (MA)

The Master of Arts in Geography emphasizes the application of geographic skills, methods, and theory to problem solving in contemporary society. To this end, students are offered a solid foundation in research methods, problem formulation and solution, quantitative methods, computer applications and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Faculty and students are active in the community and students are encouraged to complete their programs with either funded or unfunded internships in the private or public sector.

Geography (Ph.D.)

The PhD in Geography is the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences' core doctoral program reflecting the multi-disciplinary research and teaching expertise of our exceptional and award winning faculty. Doctoral students engage in coursework from within and across three areas of focus: Urban and Regional Analysis, Earth and Environmental Systems and Geographic Information Science. A broad range of electives build upon shared training in the theoretical and methodological foundations of Geography, advanced research approaches, spatial technologies and critical analysis. Independent research follows yielding a dissertation that advances knowledge in Geography and its related disciplines. The program is structured to be completed within 4 years and our graduates find professional success across the occupational spectrum - as tenure-track professors, international researchers, community planners, analysts with local to national scale governments, post-doctoral fellows, applied scientists, spatial entrepreneurs, private sector consultants and more.
