The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) master’s degree program offers several different options to prepare teacher candidates at all stages for working in the rewarding career of English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching environments. The MAT program specifically caters to candidates who do not have an educational degree but would like to seek initial ESL licensure in North Carolina. With a master’s degree in TESL, graduates work with English Learners (ELs) and can find employment opportunities in K-12 schools; Higher Education; English Language Institutes; or non-profit organizations serving immigrant communities. Become the teacher you have always wanted to be and earn a master’s degree in the process. Interested candidates must have a bachelors degree to apply, but can have an undergraduate academic major in a variety of areas that include English, Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, International Studies, Political Science, etc. Candidates do not need to have an undergraduate degree in education to apply. UNC Charlotte's Master of Arts in Teaching programs allow students to become a self-reflective master teacher, in addition to developing advanced competencies as a teacher-researcher and a teacher-leader. **Contact the Graduate Program Director to learn about the new changes to the MAT program in TESL (Fall 2019) which will provide students access to a newly redesigned online program at significantly reduced costs**
